Rainbow of Ribbons raises over £30,000
This July, areas across York and North Yorkshire were decorated with a Rainbow of Ribbons. Whether you were celebrating an occasion, saying thank you or dedicating a ribbon in memory of someone special, you helped brighten up our community in the summer of our 40th year with a colourful tribute for all to see.
We’re delighted to share that this year’s campaign raised over £30,000 to support the care we provide at the Hospice and in the community. With Gift Aid, this is estimated to be over £35,000.
Thank you to everyone who dedicated and donated. We couldn’t do what we do at St Leonard’s without you.
This year, Vicky took part in Rainbow of Ribbons in memory of her husband, Gary Druett. She explains:
“In August 2021, my husband Gary was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer. From the start, we were told it was treatable, not curable. He went through rounds of immunotherapy, chemotherapy, hospital stays and sepsis. Sadly, the cancer had already spread.
“In April 2023, Gary had a rod inserted in his arm to prevent it breaking, and in January 2024 he had a hip replacement. I used to call him my bionic man. Throughout, we were supported by the amazing palliative care team, who helped manage Gary’s pain and gave us strength. When Gary became very poorly in January 2025, the Hospice@Home team stepped in. Their care, compassion, and support allowed Gary to pass away at home, as he wished, peacefully with dignity and surrounded with love.
“This wasn’t our first experience of St Leonard’s. My father, Gary’s mum, and his step dad were all cared for by the Hospice. We knew how special they were, but this time it felt even more deeply personal.
“Caring for Gary at home was emotional and, at times, scary, but I was never alone. The support from the Hospice and district nurses was truly amazing.
“I’ve dedicated ribbons since 2017 after losing my dad. This year, I’ll be adding Gary’s name for the first time. He died on 19 January 2025 after a brave 3½-year battle. His name is also on the Memory Tree at St Leonard’s, a place full of love and remembrance.
“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”
