2025 Altra Yorkshire Marathon
Story
As a nurse who trained in York and then lived here for some years after qualifying, I always knew about the outstanding reputation of St Leonard’s Hospice. From early in my career I aspired to one day work here, and in October 2022 that wish became reality. Since then, it has been both an honour and a privilege to serve as the Head of Patient Safety and Learning, as well as the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian. Every day I see just how much St Leonard’s means to patients and families. Whether it’s through our Inpatient Unit, our Hospice@Home team, or our Wellbeing services, the care we provide is only possible because of the amazing support of our community — people like you. From fundraising and donations, to volunteering, retail and events, every contribution helps us continue to deliver compassionate care when it’s needed most. I can’t thank you enough. My own running journey has been tied to the hospice too. In 2023, recovering from ankle surgery, I joined one of our marathon relay teams and managed 10km — which, for a very unfit 34-year-old with a classic “dad bod,” felt like a huge win! In 2024, after yet another ankle op, I pushed further and completed the 10-mile option. Now, in 2025 (surgery-free so far, touch wood!), I’m facing my biggest challenge yet: the full Yorkshire Marathon. It’s not going to be easy, no doubt about it — but every mile will remind me of the patients, families, colleagues, and volunteers who inspire me every single day at St Leonard’s. By supporting me, you’re not just helping me get to the finish line (though trust me, I’ll need the encouragement!) — you’re helping ensure our hospice can continue to be there for everyone who needs us. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.
