BBC Radio York visits St Leonard's Hospice
My day with BBC Radio York!
Written by Brooke, Year 10
On Thursday 15 May, the Sunflower Centre at St Leonard’s Hospice opened its doors to BBC Radio York to broadcast a live show. They interviewed many people linked to the Hospice, with so many different stories, along with playing songs and running fun competitions! Being an aspiring journalist, I was able to attend this fantastic event to gain experience.
During the day, BBC Radio York always took a caring and genuine interest in anyone they were talking to, giving me their precious time to teach me so much. As it began, I was talked through how they communicated back to their base to organise the order of events. They use a timetable and a simple messaging system, to ensure everything is included. This was very interesting to watch and listen to as I had a pair of headphones: seeing how quickly they worked to ensure that all the interviewees felt comfortable to speak, but also so that the listeners heard a good range of information. I was so lucky to learn from everyone.
I was also able to witness the interviews: hearing how much some families have faced really showed their strength. But also hearing how much St Leonard’s had listened to them, really touched the hearts of all the people in the room. Along with hearing from the volunteers, staff and Trustees all expressing how much they love playing a role, clearly showing the warm community that blossoms here.
I will always have gratitude to anyone who helped me and guided me during that day, you have set me on such a bright path to follow my goals. That is all because St Leonard’s Hospice gave me an opportunity, which I know they have given so many people over the years.
