Vivian's story

Christmas came early for Vivian, who is currently being cared for at St Leonard’s Hospice following her terminal cancer diagnosis.

In early December, over 40 of Vivian’s colleagues from Fenwick came together over mince pies and mulled wine to celebrate her life and reminisce about working together over the years.

Dominique, Vivian’s daughter, said: “Fenwick is a huge part of Mum’s life. She’s worked in the York store on and off for over 20 years.

“She had a break when she moved to Cyprus, but she missed the ladies she worked with so much that she ended up returning!

“Mum would say the best thing about working for Fenwick is definitely the team. Over the years, they’ve all become like family to her. It was so heartwarming to see so many of them show up for her.”

Speaking about her mum’s experience of St Leonard’s, Dominique said: “She was nervous about coming to the Hospice at first. It can be daunting when you’re not sure what to expect, but the team have made her so comfortable. They’ve just been brilliant.

“Being here has made such a difference to her, both physically and mentally. Her symptoms are being managed effectively and she feels safe. It’s such a relief.

“Mum adores her two grandchildren, Noah and Joshua, and the facilities at the Hospice have been fantastic for them both. They can play pool and watch TV, and the team are so good at explaining how their grandma is. It’s hard to talk to an 8-year-old about cancer, but the St Leonard’s team have a way.

“The support provided not just to Mum, but the whole family, is phenomenal. We really couldn’t ask for anything more. They always go above and beyond, and we’re so pleased that they’ve been able to help us organise this festive get-together for Mum.”

To give thanks for the care provided to their much-loved colleague, Fenwick has made a generous donation of £2,500 to St Leonard’s, which was presented at the festive gathering.

Rebecca Elcock, Store Manager at Fenwick, said: “The Fenwick team wanted to donate to the Hospice because of the extraordinary way it brings dignity, compassion and love into the most difficult moments of people’s lives. Being there on Tuesday and seeing the friendship and care surrounding Viv reminded me that a hospice is not only about medical support, but about creating a space where families and friends can feel held, heard and connected, and a time to find peace.

“Our gift is a small way of saying thank you to the team for the comfort given to Viv and her loved ones, and for the countless families who will walk through those doors in the future.”
