Sarah's story
Behind the scenes, but never unnoticed: Why volunteers like Sarah are vital to hospice care
As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week, we’re shining a light on the many individuals who give their time, skills and energy to support hospice services. Volunteers are involved in almost every aspect of our work, not just on the front line, but also behind the scenes, helping to keep things running smoothly.
From gardening to administration, retail to reception, and driving to facilities support, volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. Their work often happens quietly in the background, but it’s absolutely essential to ensure that our care teams can focus on what matters most, supporting patients and their families.
One of those dedicated behind-the-scenes volunteers is Sarah, who volunteers with our facilities team. She shared her motivation for getting involved and what it’s meant to her.
“I was inspired to start volunteering because I wanted to give back to my community and experience the meaningful sense of achievement that comes from helping others.
I’ve always wanted to work in the care sector, but life took me down a different path. Volunteering with you gives me the chance to experience that work while supporting others at various stages of their life journeys.
You never know when you might need the help and support of the hospice and its amazing staff. Even if you only have an hour to spare occasionally, please consider volunteering, it’s really worthwhile.”
Volunteering can be about gaining experience, building confidence, connecting with others, and finding a sense of purpose. Many of our volunteers come from different walks of life: some are retired, others are working or studying, and many fit their volunteering around busy lives and family commitments.
But what unites them is a shared willingness to help others, and a belief in the importance of hospice care.
This Volunteers’ Week, we want to say thank you to Sarah, and to all our volunteers, for the time, dedication and kindness you show every day.
