George's story

George has taken part in the Moonlight Walk nine times to raise money for St Leonard’s in memory of his wife, Ann, who was cared for by the Hospice during the final weeks of her life in 2009.

In 2025, he’s preparing to take on his 10th Moonlight Walk.

“There was just over three months between Ann falling ill and her death in the Hospice, and the care from St Leonard’s was amazing. Ann had always hoped to be a catering volunteer at the Hospice when she retired, but sadly she was never able to fulfil this dream.

“As well as doing the walks, which are always great fun, I have also been a volunteer at the Hospice. I’m happy to be able to support St Leonard’s and fulfil her wishes.”

George recalls one special lasting memory of the care given by our team. He says: “One dark evening on the In-Patient Unit at the Hospice, Ann wasn’t awake, and I was quietly sitting by her bedside, spending time with her. I realised gradually that there was someone sat by my side, it was a nurse. I was very moved by the power of someone kind, who just knew the right thing to do, with no words needed, by just being there in the stillness and quiet, showing support.”

The Moonlight Walk returns this year on Saturday 13 September, where George will join 500 other walkers as they take to the streets of York.
