David's story

Volunteers at the heart of new services: Meet David, our new minibus driver

As Volunteers Week draws to a close, we’re reflecting on the many ways our volunteers support us, and on how they’re helping us shape the future of care at St Leonard’s.

David, has joined us in a new role as a volunteer minibus driver, helping patients attend appointments at the Hospice and take part in community events that support their wellbeing. This service will extend the reach of our care, helping people who might otherwise struggle to attend in person.

David explained why he wanted to be involved: “My wife Victoria died in the Hospice in March last year, and the care she was given there, and the home visits she had, made me think about one day being a volunteer for them. I know how much those trips home meant to Victoria, and when I saw the minibus drivers’ job was available I applied straight away.

“I know what having the opportunity to visit home for a short time meant to us, so I’d like to help give more patients that same experience. It meant so much to Victoria and I’ll never forget it.”

Volunteers like David are helping us deliver compassionate, person-centred care in new ways. Their generosity, time and lived experience are instrumental in helping us develop services that respond to needs in our community.

To everyone who volunteers with us, thank you. You’re making a difference today, and helping us develop our services for the future.
