2K's Trek to Machu Picchu for St Leonards Hospice.

2022-10-14

Our story began back in 2020 when Kath and I were supposed to walk 'The Great Wall of China'. It was then moved to 2021 but cancelled once again. We raised from so many of you amazing people out there over £3000 which we were truly grateful for. We still wanted to take a journey for those loved ones that we had lost so we changed our destination to Peru and now with only one week to go we are about to embark on this fabulous journey. Our Trek will commence on 17th October after we have acclimatised to the altitude. Then we will hike through parts of the Inka trail from Cusco to Soraypampa then over the next 4 days through the Andenes, Lucmabamba, Llactapata and Aguas Clientes until we reach our final destination of Machu Picchu. During this time we will have walked 73 kilometres over varying terrains from tropical rainforests to the snowy peaks of mountains reaching heights of up to 4630 meters. We will be camping for 3 nights being 1 at nature which is totally out of our comfort zone and will have experienced temperatures ranging from as high as 25 degrees to as low as -9 degrees. When we signed up for this we wanted a challenge and something that would be worthy of the Charity. So many have asked again to donate and as everyone knows the Hospice needs regular funding to keep going. So if you still would like to make any donation to this amazing charity a cause so close to my heart here is the link. Thank you to everyone for your kindness and support it really does mean a lot to us.

Story

Back in 2017 I lost my Mum to Lung cancer. She had never smoked a cigarette in her life. She was diagnosed on 6th August and we lost her on 5th November in the same year. The pain and devastation of losing someone so quickly when you are so unprepared stays with you. I know at the time my mum was scared but the Hospice even though she was only in there for 5 days were like angels from above and I will never forget what they did for my Mum and our family. There are so many stories and journeys from so many families that have had the experience of the Hospice and this is the sad reality of how important this charity is to so many people and how we need to keep this facility going. My mum was able to pass with dignity and at ease because of the care she received. We could not have done this without them. This journey is for my Mum and for me as even though this is 5 years down the line you still grieve and you still miss them. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
